Alex Cunningham manages a busy career as a Communications and Public Relations Consultant alongside several public service roles all related to his position as Cabinet Member for Children and Young People encompassing education and social care with Stockton on Tees Borough Council. Alex is the founding Chair of the Children's Trust responsible for local authority and Primary Care services to young people in his Borough.

He is a member of the Board of One North East, the regional development agency and a Non Executive Director of the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. He chaired the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council NE for more than four years and served on the National MLA Council until March 2009. He is also a former member of Arts Council England North East.

He is a media professional and worked as a journalist in local and regional newspapers and radio before a long career in public relations. His recent work has involved helping set up fuel poverty campaigns across the North of England and helping develop strategies for introducing more renewable energy technologies in the North East.

Education, formal and informal, is his passion and he sees it as the regenerative tool to develop people and communities into the future.

Alex and Evaline celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary early in 2009 and have two adult sons, John and Andrew.
