Alex Cunningham manages a busy career as a Communications and Public Relations Consultant alongside several public service roles all related to his position as Cabinet Member for Children and Young People encompassing education and social care with Stockton on Tees Borough Council. Alex is the founding Chair of the Children's Trust responsible for local authority and Primary Care services to young people in his Borough.

He is a member of the Board of One North East, the regional development agency and a Non Executive Director of the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. He has chaired the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council NE for more than four years and serves on the National MLA Council. He is a former member of Arts Council England North East.

He is a media professional and worked as a journalist in local and regional newspapers and radio before a long career in public relations. His recent work has involved helping set up fuel poverty campaigns across the North of England. Education, formal and informal, is however his passion and sees it as the regenerative tool to develop people and communities into the future.

Alex and Evaline celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary early in 2008 and have two adult sons, John and Andrew.
